Jisc- Artificial Intelligence

(Formerly Jisc National Centre for AI in tertiary education)

Jisc has a dedicated team which supports UK tertiary education institutions to utilise artificial intelligence (AI). The AI team aims to ensure that institutions have the skills and knowledge needed to implement AI tools effectively and responsibly, in order to better understand and meet the needs of their learners.

To meet these aims, Jisc is;

• Piloting a number of promising AI products so that we can share insights into which products add value and in what circumstances.
• Hosting events that will increase knowledge around AI and its uses in education
• Consulting with colleges and universities in order to understand how/whether AI solutions could address the most pressing problems they face
• Identifying and showcasing best practices in the use of AI in education so that institutions can learn from and be inspired by the experiences of others

The centre has also established a community group where participants can exchange best practice, advance their knowledge of artificial intelligence, ask questions about the technology and its applications in education, and connect with each other to find common solutions to shared problems.

Jisc welcomes interested staff in the tertiary education sector to get involved with their work:

• Join the AIED Jiscmail to receive updates from AI team, be connected with other members of the AI community, and share your experiences around the uses of artificial intelligence (AI).
• Get in touch with the Jisc AI team by email to AI@Jisc.ac.uk

Pilots

Jisc conducts pilots in order to evaluate current AI tools and products and share the findings with the sector. Information on how to take part in pilots is sent out via the Jiscmail channel and added to the NCAI blog. See the links below to view the products and tools our members have piloted:

• AnyWyse - A platform using AI to transform existing course content into short, engaging podcasts for students.

• Graide - An AI-based assessment and feedback platform.
• Chatbot - A chatbot built for student support.
• Bodyswaps - an AI/VR soft-skills training platform.

Codesigned with the sector, we've produced a set of postcards to provoke discussion and reflection around assessment approaches in higher education. Each idea postcard outlines the type of assessment task, key characteristics and appropriate formats.

  Our blog is where we publish the majority of our guidance, all posts are tagged and categorised so readers can search for aspects of AI which they want to find advice and guidance on.
• Explore AI - Demos and Case Studies
  Explore AI hosts a range of AI technology demos, from a code generator to a job recommender. These demonstrate the variety of AI uses and provide practical opportunities to try out the technology. Alongside these Explore AI hosts our AI map and Generative AI in practice hub - each share practical examples of AI use from our member institutions.
• AI Maturity Toolkit
  We’ve created an AI maturity model and toolkit to help institutions assess their current AI capabilities, plan strategically, and find relevant resources. The toolkit covers five key areas including strategic adoption, supporting staff and students, maintaining academic integrity, and ensuring safe and responsible AI use.

• AI in Tertiary Education report
  Our annual report where we summarise the current state of play of AI in the sector, including insights into emerging use cases and guidance on ethical considerations.

• Generative AI Primer
  This primer has been our most popular resource, providing a comprehensive introduction to generative artificial intelligence technology and its implications for education.

• AI Literacy webinar series resources and streams
  Our 5 part series for staff covering key aspects of AI literacy, available to download and stream, covering:

Training Courses

Jisc has produced two free mini-MOOCs to provide an introduction to key aspects of AI in education - these are open to all Jisc members.

An Introduction to Generative AI in Education: This short course will allow you to gain an understanding about Generative AI, how it can be used in education and the implications of utilising it.
