Alan Turing Institute (ATI)
The Alan Turing Institute (ATI) is the national institute for data science and artificial intelligence. The ATI is headquartered at the British Library, London.
It was founded as the national institute for data science in 2015, before adding artificial intelligence to their remit in 2017 as a result of governmental recommendation. The ATI was created by five founding universities: Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, UCL and Warwick, as well as the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. Eight further universities – Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Queen Mary University of London, Birmingham, Exeter, Bristol, and Southampton – joined the Institute in 2018.
The ATI is named in honour of pioneering computer scientist, mathematician and engineer Alan Turing (23 June 1912 – 7 June 1954).
Since its inception the Institute has been funded through grants from Research Councils, university partners and from strategic and other partnerships.
